Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

This painting, measuring 40"x48", is a mixed media collage on wood panel, and is a commentary on the environment of consumption in which we live as a global community. The Memefest theme of Debt is the underlying connoted message in the artwork. Artist: Gregory O'Toole, Assistant Professor, Department of Web Design and Interactive Media, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division, www.otoole.info.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I use a critical approach to investigate and ask tough questions, keeping in mind the inherent negatives that exist in a mediated ecosystem, so as to work toward a balanced mediated ecosystem.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

I like to bring up tough questions so that people are forced to consider the tough questions.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

That debt and consumption permeate the postmodern.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

It is good because it uses a visually stimulated design, it gets the viewers attention, it brings them in to the work, they read the clips, and start to form a full picture of the critical nature of the work.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

The material works hang in public places and galleries, they are also available digitally on the web.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

This work is build on other existing media, using newspaper clippings, iconic cultural images, graffiti technique, etc.
