Debt Dubai

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

My work is an infographic timeline that chronicles the rise and fall of Dubai's economy. It's in the format of a graph so that it's easy to follow the amount of information that is displayed. I created small pictograms to keep the viewer's interest. The color palette was inspired by the colors of the 1000 dirham bill of UAE. I made Islamic patterns so that I could put in a bit of culture into the overall design of the infograph.
It fits well into the theme of Debt, as it discusses the reasons why Dubai fell into debt. It also communicates the implications of debt and the solutions that could be suggested to help cushion the blow of debt, such as educating the youth to respond.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I designed a 2D infographic timeline in Adobe inDesign and Illustrator.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

I believe that it's important that the youth is not ignorant to the effects of debt. At least here in Dubai, debt is not widely discussed among the youth, and it is certainly not a 'trending' topic. I was aiming for the youth to understand the timeline so that it can help educate them about this very important issue of debt. By educating the youth about debt, we may have increased chances of not falling into debt again. Educating the youth on the topic properly can help them manage their finances and savings, and guarantee a safer financial future overall.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

I learned A LOT about economics. I knew nothing about it prior to this competition, and I knew that Dubai had been in debt for a while, but everyone walked around like nothing was happening. I thought it was important to make this timeline, to contribute to knowledge.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

My infograph was designed to be light hearted, fun and easy to follow. I believe that the simpler the information can be digested, the better.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

I wish my timeline could be displayed all over Dubai; on the metro, in newsletters, in schools, and online. As an online piece, it could act as an interactive web graphic that could go into even more detail.
In a hardcopy format, I'd like it to be framed on school walls, or plastered really huge onto the exterior of buildings.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)
