visual communication practice
Description of idea
Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the
festival outlines:
The concept of my work is based around my observations of random members of the public who are strangers to one another. My idea focuses on a particular observation of a public bench within the CBD where people would sit with a large gap between each other; even when there is nothing obstructing that space.
This behaviour demonstrates our lack of interest in creating an intimate space with not only each other but also with the public environment. The aim of the campaign is to highlight this issues in our actions by stating the plain obvious thoughts that may make us question why are we not including ourselves within that space and possibly reconnect the public.
What kind of communication approach do you use?
I have used a typographic approach to my concept and have applied them to stickers. Stickers were chosen as my media of presentation as I feel that they are seen on a more personal level than other forms of media. While I do not like the use of shock tactics to bring the message home, I feel that stickers have a way of suddenly appearing before an unguarded individual and getting their attention.
What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of
your communication?
I hope that with my communication the individuals of the public will be more aware of the impacts of our modern dialogue and the lack of intimate interactions happening within the public. To ultimately move the public into action by initiating a line for conversation, to create a space for more intimacy with one another within the domain of the public sphere.
What did you personally learn from creating your submitted
work?
I have learned a few interesting things from my observations for this communication. Not only about the way we act in the public but also some of automatic reactions we will have when placed in a more intimate situation. While conducting my observations I sat beside a girl around my age and while still looking down at her phone she shuffled across the bench leaving a good spacious gap between us.
Why is your work, GOOD communication
WORK?
This campaign is GOOD communication as the designs consume our attention through the underlying truth in these captions about our current behaviour and intimacy within the public sphere.
Where and how do you intent do implement your
work?
My work is a series of caption stickers which are placed and organised along public benches and seats.
Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe
the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change
other media with your work-
how?)
My intervention has not effected other media.
