The Dialogues in Our Hostel

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

Nowadays, with the advancement of the technology, the dialogues among the population have declined. One might argue this fact with the point that the dialogues has changed its forms and most of them are taking place on the Internet. However, based on my observations on the social media, a large portion of the Netizens are actually making statements of themselves rather than having dialogues with the others. Also, the people nowadays tend to stay into their own groups which the members in each of the groups has similar opinions. They tend to ignore the other voices and for those who do not, they criticize the opposing view without really looking into the reasons that make their stand.

Hence, to make the people break out from their group and have dialogues with other people that are not in the same group, I decided to create this little campaign so that the dialogues in my hostel could be increased. I have chosen to work on a smaller population because I believe that it is more efficient than working it towards a large unit of population.

My idea on encouraging the interaction between the house mates in my hostel is by organizing a puzzle game where there are prizes given. First of all, a poster would be pasted on the wall near the front door of the building, so that everybody in the hostel are aware of the game, and beside it would be the puzzle with missing pieces, waiting for the residents to complete it in the form of groups. At the same time, each resident will get a puzzle piece that would make up the puzzle, and also a contact sheet for them to put on their contact details and paste it onto their mailbox, so that people could contact each other and find out who are their group members. The group is formed basically depending of the puzzle piece each individual gets. Mystery prizes will be given to the first three groups that completed the section their group is in charge of.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I have chosen the communication-through-a-game approach in my campaign because I believe that by making the project in a more playful way, the people would be more interested in participating it. The psychology of people wanting to win a prize is also implemented in my campaign.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

Personally, the society would break the ice and start to know each other when they participate the game. Besides, my campaign could also make the community to have the feeling of togetherness because teamwork is required to complete the game.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

Personally, I have improved my observing skills through the completion of this work. Most of my time were spent to identify the problems and their causes, and to figure out a workable idea in order to turn the situation better.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

My work should be considered as a good advertising design work because the communication method I used is simple and there is no strict cultural controls used. Hence, the targeted community could participate the campaign without having a specific knowledge or qualification. Besides, my campaign is also socially responsible because its final objective is to bring the participants together and hence, a harmonious community could be formed.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

The place I plan to implement my work would be the hostel I am living in, since there are limited interactions between the residents and in my believe, working on a small population is more effective because the society is made of small units, which are families. In this case, the hostel residents living under the same roof is regarded as a family unit.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

In my opinion, I do not see any direct effects brought by my campaign on the other media. But in an indirect way, the campaign might eventually increase the dialogues between the community members online since nowadays people still tend to communicate using the Internet due to its convenience.
