Memefest Book: How to get it? The Wikileaks and Paypal dilemma

Dear Comrades, dear friends. As our new extensive Memefest book is out, we have received many emails on how to get it. Sure, we would like to bring it as close to our community as possible, but as we will explain we have a dilemma.

As you all know, Memefest supports Wikileaks. One of the very problematic gestures of neoliberal capitalist business was to block Wikileaks' payments they have received from supporters all over the planet.

Services that have blocked Wickileaks include also PayPal, the Internet payment service provider.

Now, you see...in Slovenia, our book is sold in all mayor bookshops and it is possible to buy it online through the publishers online store. As a academic publishing house the web site is only in Slovene, so it makes it hard for non Slovene speaking people to order the book through it.

This is why we wanted to use PayPal. We would install it here on our web site and everyone would be able to buy the book in few minutes time, and we would than send it from here.

Well, the thing is that we don't really want to use PayPal for obvious reasons.
And here we need your help. What Internet service can we use to make the payment of the book secure, fast and easy, without supporting the beast??

Anyone with an idea?

Memefest on Petcha Kutcha in Brasil

Our beautiful comrade and Memefest team member from Brasil Ines Nin has recently done this presentation at a Petcha Kutcha event. Its really inspirational to see the appreciation of years of work around the world. And the sympathetic presentation is really in the informal vibe we all like so much.

Facebook does not understand me

so... there are this commercial ads on the right side of FaceBook page, with this little "X" on top right side of every ad. if you click it, you get this:

You have removed this ad. Why didn't you like it?

When i click "offensive", i get this:

Thanks for your feedback. Over time, this information helps us deliver more relevant ads to you.

hmm. i think there is a misunderstanding here. :)

BOOKS for Vijecnica - Action project, Bosnia and Herzegovina

I just received this email. Let's do something!

Dear Sir/Madam,

BOOKS4VIJECNICA is an action project, initiated by Humanity in Action Senior Fellow Network in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Our initiative is to re-establish the destroyed book collection of Vijecnica, the National Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina !
During the four-year long siege of Sarajevo, from 1992 till 1995, Vijecnica was repeatedly shelled by the Yugoslav and afterward by the Serbian army.
On the fatal date, the 26th of August 1992, around 2 (two) million publications and more than 6000 valuable rare items and documents were completely destroyed in the fire.

This was, what many consider, the largest single act of book burning in modern history.

The Library staff evacuated parts of the remaining book collection to various locations in the city - atomic shelters, basement rooms, university buildings or other cultural centers.
There have been initiatives in repairing the Library building, though not many have been taken in restoring the book collection.

Our goal is to give students in Sarajevo the chance to benefit from contemporary books than the ones they are using right now or not using at all.

PLEASE READ OUR LETTER IN YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE, and help us in reinstating the book collection of VIJECNICA!

We warmly welcome all questions, ideas or opinions you would like to share with us.

Jasmin Hasic
Senior Fellow Network
Bosnia and Herzegovina

Further information:

The National Library is currently under construction and until it is finally put in its function, your books donations will be stored in faculties and used by students of University of Sarajevo.
Each book collected through this action project will be cataloged and marked by staff working in the National University Library Vijecnica, prior to their transfer to the faculties. Once the reconstruction of Vijecnica building is finalized, the books will be transported directly there.

Love for Memefest posters*

Traditionally Memefest puts special attention to the poster medium for each festivals promotional campaign. It's probably the love for paper and a visual communication tool which is tightly and historically connected to social movements. But it's also the potential effectiveness of the poster which is important. Every year we choose to work with someone whom we like and whose work we respect. It's a interesting process for us too. It makes us visually articulate the festival concept and pushes us further in the process of understanding it's social and cultural relevance.

So here we go: beautiful and strong, this three posters represent different perspectives of this years theme LOVE:CONFLICT:IMAGINATION. The plan was to create a visual poem, a open narrative that leaves enough space for subjective interpretation and active narration, while still remaining consistence to our theme which connects the personal with the social.

We will print posters in the next few days. They will be distributed in Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Rio, Bogota, Belgrade, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and different cities in the Netherlands. This distribution will be made in collaboration with Memefest nodes, friends and partner organizations: Pina, Pink Sweater and Loesje.

You will be able to get this posters at the Radical communication event in Nijmegen, which will be held in beginning of June 2011, till than, enjoy if you see them in the streets around the world.

pps: we received many emails asking us where to get this posters.

New Memefest book

There is a good vibe and exciting time at Memefest right now. After months and months of hard work we are in the finishing phase of Memefest book. We are planing to put it to print next week. It's gonna be a fantastic piece of work, i can promise. Edited and curated content from all past Memefest's as well as new original content will be published in book form for the first time. Cca 500 pages of theory, art, design, examples of radical communication practice and Memefest insights, printed in full color.

One of the artists that collaborated with us in the past is Katie Bush. I am a big fan of her work. We asked her to create a cover for the book and she did. Psychedelic pixelart meets the thin line of subversive humor/seriously surprising narrative.

Here's just a detail from the image Katie sent me today. Have a look at her website for more of her work: www.katiebushart.com and check the project she received a Memefest award for: www.destroyevil.com.

We will write more about the book and create a special website soon.

Thank's a lot Katie!!!

I have joined the Memfest community becasue i am interested in

I have been here from the very beginning of Memefest. I am interested in communication/design for social and environmental change.
I name such communication socially responsive communication.

Broadly speaking I am interested in visual communication, photography, sociological aspects of communication, design and media.

Iam interested in institutionalised forms of communication like for example communication done by design/communication studios and advertising agencies as well as non institutionalised forms of communication like tactical media or broader aspects of media activism.

In a slightly more academic language:

I am interested in how critical social theory can illuminate the complex processes of production, distribution and reception of public (visual) communication in order to generate public communication as a responsible social, political, economic and cultural practice.

I am particularly interested in relations between concepts of response-ability and communication effectiveness, and the social construction of design and other forms of pubic communication as profession, practice and praxis within academia, the market environments and non-institutionalised communities.
