Subfield description

To question our relationships with the oceans as a food source. Only 1% of the worlds oceans are protected. Are we going to eat our way into an ecological catastrophe?

Check out the Food Democracy 2013 outlines of Memefest Friendly competition.

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

After meeting Vandana Shiva in India at the end of 2012 I have been very passionate about focusing my skills as a creative towards ethical and meaningful topics. Food is something that we are becoming more and more out of touch with. Our relationship with fish is frightening. If you eat fish, do you know where your last fish came from, or how it was caught, whether it was illegally caught or if that species is sustainable to eat?

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I use the food as the medium. The condiments provide the tools to typographically spell out my message. Using mushy peas, ketchup, mayonnaise and chips I am hoping to use food that we all know a love so well. The hope is that the message is clear and something that we can all identify with.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

The films provided great information about food democracy, all of which I learnt from Vandana Shiva personally while attending the course "Earth Democracy" in North India, the subject however does not include the oceans and they too are crucial to our planets health. I hope to benefit the community by enriching the subject beyond saving seeds, but saving fish stocks also.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

Photography is becoming more and more crucial to my practice. Creating messages and documenting them may be how I continue to practice my design practise. The process was a huge learning curve.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

The sentence is a question and therefore open ended. I am not making huge statements and using my authorship status to be over authoritative. It leaves the audience something to ponder and question. Just ask yourself, are you hungry for an oceanic apocalypse? It is not clear initially but with thought the message and theme of over fishing is obvious. Voting with your fork is something you can do three times a day.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

I am to print these images at A0 size and to place them outside of supermarkets. The image is one of a series whereby the message is destroyed. I'd like to return to the location updating the poster until just the table cloth is left.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

I hope the message will have impact when I place it back in the streets.
