Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

I have responded to the factors that harm the value of seeds to
farmers. The issue is that agribusinesses, such as Monsanto, are claiming
patents on seeds and producing hybrid seeds. Poor farmers have to buy the
hybrid seeds as well as pesticides to grow rice, but when these seeds fail to
grow farmers face debt and commit suicide. This shows the ineffectiveness
of genetically modified seeds, which is part of biotechnology and industrial
agriculture. Industrial agriculture also requires a lot of chemical fertilizers that
reduces the quality of the land, making it infertile or cultivation. Overall, these
factors not only deprive farmers of their staple food but it also diminishes the
cultural and traditional knowledge that farmers have of the seed.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I’ve communicated the issue through a series of posters. The general idea of ‘save our seeds’ applies to all posters, with each one communicating the different factors that contribute to the issue. There is no particular order to read the posters but the idea communicated is strongest when they are viewed altogether.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

From this intervention, I’m hoping people will be more aware
of the struggle, pressure and hardship that farmers face, and for people
to be mindful of how important seed is to farmers. Likewise, I hope people
will choose to purchase organic seeds, rice and other products over food
products that are genetically modified.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

That I never really thought about where my food came from i.e. how it was produced, who produced it, and its process before it reaches my plate. I also realised how lucky I am to be able to afford and eat 3 meals a day, while others are really finding it tough to the point of committing suicide.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

The design is simple and straight to the point i.e. a lot of people know what SOS means. Also, the format of a poster means it can reach a lot of people at one time.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

Ideally, the posters will be displayed near supermarkets and is aimed at the general public.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

No, there was no media report on my work.
