Subfield description

We come from very activistic background. our first piece has been the SMSlingshot that was created in a bigger group called VR/urban. We experiment with experiences of space, misuse technologies and think too much

ARTIST BIO / THE CONSTITUTE

The Ready to Cloud project started in the beginning of 2013 and is an approach to set up a holographic - ephemeric display for the use of teleportation as we all know it from Star Trek.
Ok... nearly.
What ready to cloud does: An artificial cloud is created in two different cities. These two clouds are connected via internet. In front of both clouds people can get 3D-scanned in realtime and will be projected as a holograph into the cloud. Because this happens at the same time, both people meet in the cloud in front of them, where they can start to interact in a gestural way.
After use, the Cloud disappears again. The people (or better their avatars) have been teleported. With this project we propose a new way of thinking about displays as ephemeric and elusive displays for spatial representation. No rigid and physical-sustainable material. We use it for trans-lpcative communication that reflects communication as a momentum of meeting. It constitutes whenever needed and fades away when obsolete.

Why?

Because we feel a broad gap in between the societies. Everybody is hooked to her or his smart phone, head down. We want to bring in the joy, the utopia of comunication back on the map. Remember that future when we could teleport our selves somewhere to talk face to face with somebody? Remember that new idea of trans-location? Of beeing here and there? Of that dis-bodied image?
With our project we want play around with full body communication. ready to cloud does not offer audio communication. It´s only gestures and only for a brief moment. When the cloud disappears, the communicating partner is gone aswell. By that ephemeric twist to this experimental communication technology, we want the users to focus on that precious moments. We want them to use it wisely.
It´s a pity that it does not work outdoors, as we tried it. The idea to link Berlin Neukölln, a migrantish neighbourhood with Istanbuls Beyoglu, having clouds in the streets in which the family members meet... that´s not possible. But: from closed space to closed space: that´s working as the video shows.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

We want to create an elusive display. a display that does not stay forever, that disappears and by this values the moment.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

It´s joyful and questions a lot. We guess that´s allready a lot. And it plays with futures. The old ones and the current.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

That triggering communication is complicated. it´s so hard to get serious behaviours. everybody is kidding around. maybe it´s the wrong contextes....

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

It´s not. It´s a pity. We´re honest. It mainly shows that people are very numb and as soon as they see themselves in the clouds they feel much more excited than seeing the other person.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

Between cities, in in door, but open to the public festivals.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

no.

Wow! Many adjectives describe this work: visually stunning, audacious, sophisticated, futuristic.

And while it is all these things it is something more simple and compelling: a dialogue between absent others. This idea underpins the history of communications and telecommunications, from speech and writing to electric and electronic media, to haptics, virtual reality and most recently cloud computing.

What is most savvy and playful about the work is its asute and happy engagement with the futuristic teleportation technology of Star Trek. There is no po-faced seriousness about your engagement with Gene Roddenberry's celebrated "vapourware". It is deliciously ironic and detournes it from the fanciful to the actual, the social and the intimate.

In terms of the notion of vapourware, have you considered playing around with this especially in relation to the metaphor of the "cloud"? As a tactical intervention into big IT's appropriation of the cloud as the next stage of the corporate internet, playing with the cloud in a more simple and humorous way would be a very sharp and effective form of critical intervention. This might be something to consider for, with a nod to Star Trek, the "next generation" of the work ;)

Your work is wonderfully satirical and in this sense is a riposte to a corporate culture that is so aloof, capitalist driven and removed from the realities of what post-broadcast media are best at doing: bringing people together in dialogue.

Thank you for letting me share you work..

dear darren,

thanks for your detailed and positive feedback. ot´s a pleasure to read the lines. i want to go through few points and try to clear or mystify certain things.
We play with the cloud in a very metaphorical and claimy way. We initially called the project ready to fog, because of the warning on the fog machines we played around with. also the notion to ready to f*ck was quite appealing to us. but then the people who gave us the money to build the first prototype decided to rename it in their sense, also because they had the italian telecom in the back. we thought: come on, leave us with that name chit chat... give us the cash so we can realize it. well, of course we had the cloud notion, but we came from a more questioning direction. what happens when these IT cloud rain, what kind of puddles result... these been the questions from the cloud side. but really cloud computer is what it is not.
the irony, somehow we can´t agree with 100%. of course it´s not biting serious. but for us, it´s serious to elaborate, to test the future promised to us in star trek. all that sci-fi stuff... that it results in a ironically naive way, maybe that´s just the way it is. it´s not judging.
