DIALOGUE - ZINE

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

This Zine tells the story of Dialogue.
Articulating it’s evolution, it’s rise and demise, it’s downward spiral.
It attempts to confront the issue that verbal dialogue is becoming rare and could one day become non-existent if technology keeps progressing at this rate.
The first page includes 5 variations of the word dialogue. They all feature a form of disruption to the word. 4 out of the 5 are missing certain letters to evoke the gaps and holes that are being formed in dialogue today, in this case verbal dialogue becoming rare in comparison to other means of communication.
The one variation that includes all the letters features the last letter ‘E’ turned on a 90 degree angle to demonstrate the disruption technology is causing to verbal dialogue.
The second and third pages are introductory pages aimed to explain and encourage thought about the contents and message of this Zine.
The forth page featuring circles demonstrates the holes that are forming in our dialogue. Pages 5 to 7 demonstrates the evolution of the word ‘Speak’ which turns into ‘Ekk,’ evoking that people are afraid to speak to each other.
Page 8 features distorted zigzags aiming to convey skewed voice lines.
Pages 9 through to 11 demonstrates the evolution of ‘Talk’ which turns into ‘Txt’ evoking the message that people txt instead of picking up the phone and talking to someone directly.
Pages 12 to 14 feature circles demonstrating the downward spiral of dialogue. One of the circles is the ‘O’ in ‘hello.’ On the next page the ‘O’ is left out turning the word into ‘Hell,’ demonstrating that dialogue is going to hell. Page 16 featuring crosses follows the theme of hell and death of verbal dialogue.
Pages 17 and 18 suggest that people went from being ‘Offline’ all the time to constantly being ‘Online’ essentially having a negative impact on verbal dialogue.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

This communication of Dialogue is presented in the form of a 'Zine,' an A5 publication design for people to pick up, read and interact with.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

This Zine was designed for people to pick up, interact with and respond to the issues raised. In this case the lack of verbal dialogue in the world today.
It aims to evoke thought and conversation about the issues of dialogue but most of all it is aimed to remind people to go back to the basic of Dialogue. Verbally TALK, say HELLO, SPEAK to people and have some time OFFLINE.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

I learnt that Dialogue has dramatially changed in the last 20 years in response to new technologies. It seems as though people are almost afraid of face to face dialogue today. Exchanging words with someone was once only possible to do verbally.
Now there are a million different ways to communicate via phones, computers and the rest. These technologies are convenient but are causing people to feel more alone then ever.
I also learnt how rare it has become to talk, to hold a conversation, verbally, in comparison to texting or talking to someone online.
Which lead me to question like; Where is the beauty and satisfaction in reading something from a screen? Where has the personality and expression in dialogue gone?
Most importantly I learnt you cannot beat verbal interaction, it provides a sense of warmth, comfort and purpose, things words on a screen cannot provide.
Verbal Dialogue can build character and form relationships, words on a screen drains the life out of you, it makes you become monotone.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

This Zine is a GOOD piece of communication because it initially draws you in via it's use of fluro colours. Once someone has flicked through the pages and interacted with this publication piece it will provoke thought and conversation on the issue of Dialogue. In this case the lack of verbal dialogue.
It aims to reminds people to go back to the basics of Dialogue. Verbally TALK, say HELLO, SPEAK to people and have some time OFFLINE.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

I intend to place this Zine in places amongst other publications and also in places where people typically put their head down and forget to take part in verbal dialogue. For example coffee shops, doctors rooms, magazine stands. People will then pick up this Zine and flick through it, interact with it and then reflect on it's message.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

No this intervention didn't have an effect on other media.
