Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

My idea was to address the failure of dialogue when it comes to street harassment specifically directed towards women. Public space can be unsafe for women as they are unable to go about routine daily tasks without receiving inappropriate comments, usually from men and occasionally from other women. My concept involves interactive media, in order to make others, especially men, feel how women feel when confronted by inappropriate slurs. This is intended to make people reconsider how we allow people to treat others in public to create a safer environment for everyone.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I have used static media in order for my work to be somewhat semi-permanent in public. I have used a personal communication so it makes the viewer/user feel what women experience.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

I hope that society may have a dialogue in educating both men and women on what type of communication is acceptable and what is harassment. This will hopefully lead to a safer community.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

I learned that we still have a long way to go in stopping harassment towards women, verbally, physically and mentally. A combination of dialogue and education is the first step in teaching respect for women, but also general behaviour in public.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

My work is GOOD advertising work because it encourages dialogue and education on respect for all humans. I feel that it addresses the community’s need to become are more safe, friendly place for not only women, but for everyone.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

I intend to implement my tunnel decals in small spaces, such as railway tunnels or laneways in order to convey the sense of worry that women feel when confronted with sexist and inappropriate slurs. The slide wall would be placed in cafes at the counter where people with a bit of spare time would be able to take 2 minutes out of their day to contribute. The stickers may be placed wherever the user would like, however the sheets containing the stickers may be placed in magazines or at cafes.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)
