The Struggle

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

There are many things that have a significant impact on today’s society and debt is one of those things. Debt is everywhere, it designs and takes control of our lives, affecting not just us but our whole world. The first thing that comes to mind with debt is an overwhelming sense of struggle and chaos and I wanted to incorporate this into my artwork. Within this piece I wanted to create a tension and struggle between the foreground and background, as people sometimes lose themselves within debt, this is what I believe the figure in the foreground achieves against a busy and chaotic background. The background contains a mixture of numbers and text, textures and images all adding to the confusion that debt creates. The Atlas figure within the piece depicts man and the effects of debt on man and the world itself, it is always going to be a constant struggle. To tie the whole image together an image of money was placed within the Earth on Atlas’ shoulders to depict the effect that money has on us all. For the colour scheme, I decided to stay with a cool palette of colours and these colours coincidently represent the emotions of sadness, loss and depression, which can be associated with debt.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

The kind of communication I use within my piece is a visual approach and this was through an A3 poster which can be placed anywhere, which will hopefully capture people's attention when they view it.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

The concrete benefits to the society because of my poster would be that people would become more aware that not just themselves go through or experience debt in some, it can affect anyone.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

The thing I personally learnt from creating my submitted work was that it can be difficult to portray debt in a visual without being too obvious and that there are various forms of debt.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

I think my work is good communication work because it does not really state the obvious about the subject, it gets people to think about what the poster is about and can make connections to debt through all the elements with the poster.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

A series of posters would be printed and placed around the streets, or in shop windows, places where a lot of people would be able see it clearly.

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)
