Description of idea
Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:
The Main Principle of SIMPLE is to instill a thought into the back of students minds which questions their need to go into DEBT for indulgent personal spendings. Personal debt (via credit cards and bank loans) has become integrated and socially accepted in the 21st century. Our personal needs have changed over time from living a simple lifestyle in the 1980’s to today, and our desire to have the latest, greatest and best of everything.
SIMPLE challenges this current lifestyle students are living where they are willing to over spend their budget on personal purchases. By introducing this idea of questing their initial thought process when purchasing items SIMPLE provides student with a way to help making educated decisions before going into DEBT.
Do you really need to go into DEBT to purchase these items (shoes, clothes and electronics)? Will I completely benefit from it? Can I really afford it? The awareness which SIMPLE instils into students thought process of personal spending will hopefully initiate conversation among friends and help with future purchases.
What kind of communication approach do you use?
SIMPLE is an interactive project which allows students to display personal spendings among other items on a whiteboard for evaluation. The Idea is to use am interactive, tactical object like the white board to visually communicate the concept of personal spending to the students. Challenging their traditional thought process and questioning their needs to purchased their latest indulgent gift though an interactive process.
What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?
In David Graeber review of the DEBT: The First 5000 years, he speaks about how debt has influenced different periods in history. In today’s 21st century DEBT is a major influence in how our society runs. History shows that there have been times where it has been more successful to adapt to old ways (such as the movement from Virtual Credit > Coinage > then back to Virtual Money). SIMPLE questions this idea of adapting to traditional ways of dealing with debt and provides students with an outlet to query their current ways of personal spending, benefiting society by thinking about change into their future personal purchases.
What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?
SIMPLE Has changed my perception when spending my money and questioned my thought process when going into debt. In today’s world we don’t need to go into debt to have the latest and greatest items. I think about different ways I am able to purchase items before going into DEBT. Only purchasing items which I truly would benefit from and not a waste of my money. I now plan my purchase putting away money each week to save up for new items which I wish to purchase.
Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?
SIMPLE is an effective communicative work because it is looking into the future of students personal debt. Instilling this thought process may became a useful tool for future purchases. It is not only benefitting students now but also preparing them for what is to come next.
Where and how do you intent do implement your work?
SIMPLE would be integrated into the personal workspace environments of students, because the topic is a personal matter. The concept of a white board incorporated into their personal space means the answer can be truthful and not a lie.
Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)
