Subfield description

Being a designer by profession I use my visual skills to create socially engaged graphics, especially environmental exhibitions and social posters on different topics. We (Lukatarina design studio) have recieved numerous awards for these kind of projects including Brumen award and 2nd place at the first Ljubljana poster festival. Our awareness raising work has been featured in prominent design magazines such as Novum 6/2012 and Idn. Our most effective campaign was a volunteer collaboration effort Vrecka na Vrecko (Bag on Bag) which fused street/trash art and environmentalism to inform the public about the problem of plastic bag overuse. Also we discovered the Bagfoot creature, which has been an ongoing public space performans/intervention. We are passionate about our activist work. Oh, another thing related to Debt topic was my organization of a round table meeting on the topic of alternative money currencies. I am personally very interested in helping to change current banking/money system or at least help to inform the public about the injustices that this system enforces upon the population.

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

In line with the article you have chosen to guide us, I have chosen a symbol of a worker who has a lot of work to do. He will be working his ass all his life to finish the job he has been given. Will he ever finish? Isn't he no more but a slave in this situation. For me this is exactly the situation with debt. I am not focusing on possible positive aspects of debt based economy, because I believe debt is not natural in any way. My position is abundance for all, but not abundance of plastic toys made in china of course. We need different values, but first we must get free of the banking debt grip that is holding us down. This poster makes us aware of our position at this moment. I would like to add also that debt creates a need for growth and unlimited economic growth which is still on the lips of all the politicions is utopic and unrealistic and is destroying our planet.

What kind of communication approach do you use?

I use a medium of a poster, which is my favourite activist medium. Making the strongest possible impact I choose to use strong and simple iconic symbol/traffic sign language. Making a spoof from original traffic sign for Work on the street. We all know the sign and making it different, enlarging the dirt pile even over the sign makes you notice it. And the pile is kind of surreal, going over the board, which is extactly what DEBT is like. It is surreal, maney made out of nothing.

What are in your opinion concrete benefits to the society because of your communication?

The poster shows the situation of our position as borrowers of money, credit takers which must work and work and are quite often even unable to actually return the money by working. The poster therefore tries to wake us up. It is quite clear in it's message (I also tested it with a few persons) so it can make an impact, that a poster can make.

What did you personally learn from creating your submitted work?

Once again I learned that I can use simple language for the most effect and clear message.

Why is your work, GOOD communication WORK?

Simple and effective, with clear message.

Where and how do you intent do implement your work?

Feature it on our website, include it in exhibition that we will organize. Try to get it printed ... If there will be some demonstration I will produce a poster one can carry. I am willing to give it to the public domain ...

Did your intervention had an effect on other Media. If yes, describe the effect? (Has other media reported on it- how? Were you able to change other media with your work- how?)

Not yet, I just designed it:)
