I was inspired by a video of a march against debt in one of the developing countries. A citizen was holding a sheet with “ I want $4 trillion” written on it. That reminded me of Uncle Sam’s famous saying: “I want you for the U.S. Army”. From there I developed my idea and I created this piece of artwork.

Description of idea

Describe your idea and concept of your work in relation to the festival outlines:

In my poster I use James Montgomery’s Poster “I Want You for the U.S. Army” as a reference. When the poster was published in 1916, its meaning was that Uncle Sam, who symbolizes the American government and the big power that controls people, orders the citizens to join the Army. In my poster, Uncle Sam presents The World Bank, which has been in control of the word recently. When I looked into the World Bank’s website, I found that in the
developing countries the external the debt reached $4 trillion and is still rising.
The overall idea of my piece is sarcasm of the idea of how government expects people to pay huge amounts of money, and these amounts are continuously rising.

*”The combined stock of developing countries’ external debt rose $437 billion to $4 trillion at end in 2010” As mentioned in the World Bank website.
