Description
Through his artwork, Christian Barré explores our perception of the power of prefabricated images and ultimately, our ability to make the distinction between reality and advertising’s empty promises. Car Crash Memories results from a production based on his observation of damaged objects and faked images. The intention is to lampoon the media’s interpretation of social behavior by creating a poignant skit. To accomplish this the artist appropriates the formats, plans and lighting style specifically related to luxury item ads, then reintroduces them in photos parodying a tragic car accident. An airbag accessorizes each shot.Deprived of context, the object, while unrecognizable, still effectively serves to link each image. The dramatic simulation of the photographed subjects, all non-actors, is driven by its presence. “My project is not depicting of a dramatic scene but rather creating a lustful atmosphere that arrives at an account of disillusion.” By reinterpreting the persuasive powers of the mind-numbing advertising world, Christian Barré questions the drift of our social behaviors in facing the commercial aspect of communicative aesthetics.
